This is clearly a story with a message. Of course, everyone knows that male cows who are useless for milk will be going to the slaughterhouse when they reach a certain age. Often the youth don't know this. The story in this book is going about that. The story is written for children between 6 and 12 years of age. Personally I think that it is a little bit difficult for the 6 years ones. There were used a few words that I even didn't know as non-native English speaking adult. The author used two small line stories. One is the view through the eyes of the crow with regard to the special lifestyle of Humphrey, a male Hereford, He is not a food product anymore like the other ones on the farm. Humphrey is the pet of the children and has an emotional bonding with the two children Nick and Lindi. The second line story is based on the opinion of the crow with regard to the way of handling of meat products on the farm. What I found disturbing was the fact that the crow in his monologues often strayed from the main point of the story. During the book the life of Humphrey is many times unsure because the uncle of the family wanted to sent him to the slaughthouse. Can Lindi and Nick save their pet in time?
