The author of this book played a very important part in the history of the Orange Free State. At various times he was: Attorney of the State; Field Cornet; Officer, Bloemfontein Rangers; Trustee of the Joint Stock Bank of Bloemfontein; Bloemfontein's delegate in the Volksraad; Member of the High Court of Appeal; Cahirman of the Commision to administer the goverment during President Brand's illness (1872) and absence oversea (1876). This book contains the reminiscences of a man who stayed from his fifthteenth year (1851) in the O.F.S. and who witnessed personally the ernomous changes and political events in th emiddle of the second half of the 19th century. All his reminiscences are historically documented.
